fruit of the spirit: self-control.

this week I thought I'd touch on something Chad and I have been learning a little bit about lately. it isn't directly self-control if you are putting a title to it, but I think if you look deep down it has a lot to do with practicing self-control.

basically it is about justice. and grace and forgiveness and what those should all look like according to the Word. he has been reading Culture of Honor, and I just started reading Grace & Forgiveness, and it's funny how complimentary the two are and how unplanned that was on our part. we are learning the difference between what Godly justice looks like and how the world sees justice now and how selfish and turned around we as a people have made it. so I just thought I would share a little part from the book I'm reading.

'We have to trust God to administer justice as He sees fit in His own time. We don't take the matter into our own hands. Instead, we must choose to remain in God's river of grace, remembering how big He is and how loving, kind, and patient He is with us when we fall..
There are many Christians walking around today who wonder to themselves, "Why does everything seem to go wrong in my life? Why is the devil always after me? Why does there seem to be a curse over my life?" They are trying to work out why there doesn't seem to be any protection over their life. In many cases this will be because they have made poor choices in their relationships with others and chosen to "bury" the hurt and bitterness of past offenses instead of forgiving and releasing these to God. By their choices they have made themselves vulnerable to attack. By withholding mercy from others and exercising unforgiveness they have stemmed the flow of God's blessing and protection over their lives, leaving them open to assault from demonic forces. Even if someone does the most terrible thing to you, you must never go back to the justice level. It must be grace, grace, grace. Leave the justice with God. Don't allow your heart to become hurt, bitter and unforgiving. Trust instead in his love, grace, and blessing toward you..
Forgiveness is not an option. If we withhold forgiveness from those who have hurt us, no matter how well justified we feel in doing so, we are creating a barrier that will prevent the grace of God flowing into our life.'

[the italicized parts were things that jumped out at me, they aren't actually like that in the book.]

I realize there are circumstances where something should be done to prevent further injury, whether it be physical or emotional, and the books touch on that. but what they are getting at is that it isn't our job. our job is to forgive and extend grace. because that is what God does, and always has done, for us. so knowing this, we have to trust He will stay true to that and try to give that same gift of grace to others. and that can be so hard when you are the one hurting.

so I tie that in with self-control because it is something we have to learn and practice is this justice-happy world. it does not benefit us to go on talking about our struggles and bash the ones that hurt us. extending grace takes a whole lot of unnecessary stress off of us (longer life!) and helps keep our hearts at peace.

{make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord. see to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many. hebrews 12:14-15}

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

welp, that's it, I guess. this series went so fast! when I really think about it, it has been a while, but this year seems like it is just flying by! I hope you have enjoyed learning along with me. if you missed some of the posts, you can find them all here. also, keep up with the rest of the bloggers in the coming days.

fruit of the spirit: gentleness.

gentle [jen-tl] -adjective
1. kindly; amiable: a gentle manner.
2. not sever, rough, or violent; mild: a gentle wind; a gentle tap on the shoulder.
3. moderate: gentle heat.
4. gradual: a gentle slope.

this is one of my favorite things to read about. something stirs inside when I read Philippeans 4:5 or Colossians 3:12. and oh, 1 Peter 3:4. when I read about it I feel better about who I am and I rest in who God has made me to be. because gentleness is okay. and when He decided to mold me into Ali Taylor, he knew what (& why) he was doing. a friend told me once that when she read that verse in 1 Peter she thought of me. such a wonderful thing to say (& funny, I could say the same for her). I do hope my life speaks that. I hesitate even writing those things though, because I don't want it to sound like, 'look at me and how gentle I am'. and I realize also, that in some situations it can be a fault. maybe it means I'm too sensitive, but I can only hope that practicing gentleness will help me in the long run.

and there is no law against gentleness. or any of the fruits, really. we are told so in the next part of that verse in Galatians.

I read an article the other day that struck a little nerve. it's a sensitive subject so I choose to not go into lots of detail but one of the lines started like this.. 'We still have pastors calling for the death of gay people..'

calling for their death? what will that accomplish? that hurt my heart. whether I agree with a lifestyle different than my own that I see as truth or not. there is a better way to express your thoughts. a better way of dealing with certain situations. how is it okay to wish people dead?

gentleness can do what force always fails to do. if you have time to read that, I encourage you to. it has a lot to do with being a mom, but I felt like that could be applied to all areas of life.

fruit of the spirit: faithfulness.

..courtesy of my New Orleans friend, Nathan. super grateful for this guy because he not only teaches us about God centered relationships and being a great parent, but also because he lets me hang out with his amazing wife. a lot. they are a big part of the church we've been attending and Emily has been such a blessing to get to know during this big move in an unfamiliar city. & I needed a little help on turning faithfulness into words this week, so here he is to talk about it.

Many claim to have unfailing love, but a faithful person who can find? – Proverbs 20:6

So what is faithfulness? It’s simply a person who is loyal, dependable, trustworthy, and honest. And sadly, I think this is one of most absent fruit in the life of most Christians in my generation. Time and time again, I see my friends commit to doing something and never act upon that commitment or see them find themselves so afraid of commitment that they run away as quickly as possible. When I became a Christian, it was one of the things that probably changed the quickest. Prior to being a Christ follower, I wasn’t a person of my word and could care less about faithfulness. Now, as a Christian, I want to be a person of my word. I desire for my yes to be yes and my no to be no.

At the end of the day, a person either chooses to live a life of selfishness or a life of faithfulness. You can choose to be faithful to your marriage or you can choose to be selfish in your marriage. We can choose to be faithful in our job or we can choose to be selfish in our job. We can choose to be faithful in our relationships or we can choose to be selfish in our relationships. Your love of self will quickly harm anything of value in your life. Love is meant to be shared, not squandered.

Here are some lessons that I’ve learned on my journey with faithfulness:

1) Remember Christ’s faithfulness to me.

I think it’s helpful when talking about faithfulness to begin with discussing the faithfulness of God. We are ultimately dependent on His faithfulness for our salvation (1 Corinthians 1:8-9), for Him to forgive us of our sinfulness (1 John 1:9), and for eternal life (Hebrews 10:23). We are dependent on Him to deliver us from temptation (1 Corinthians 10:13). We are dependent on Him to deliver us through the difficult times of suffering (1 Peter 4:19). Luckily, God isn’t like us in that he doesn’t change (Malachi 3:6). He’s ever constant. We can trust in His faithfulness because He is faithful in all of his promises (Psalm 145:13)!

When I’m reminded of the faithfulness of Christ to me, I am able to remember my faithfulness to others.

2) Remember the why of my commitment.

When we commit to a person or project, we always remember the what – I’m doing x to accomplish y. But my one time choice of commitment is not enough. I have to renew that commitment. I have to find myself continually coming back to the why rather than the what of that commitment. I have to come back and remember why I’m faithful to my spouse. I have to come back and remember why I’m faithful to my church. In the difficult times, if I don’t have a why, I’ll find myself abandoning the commitment altogether.

3) Remember that a no is better than an abandoned yes.

There is a fine balance between committing to everything that comes your way and committing to nothing. If you commit to everything, you will quickly burnout and the important things that you committed to will all suffer in quality. If you commit to nothing, you will find yourself years later filled with regret after an unaccomplished and uncommitted life.

In the process, remember the importance of saying say no to the unimportant, but do not negate the necessary. While in the process, also remember to keep an ear tuned to God to direct your steps.

4) Remember to commit to things that add value to your life.

It’s okay to be a little selfish and some commitments are rewarding. A 25th wedding anniversary is a rewarding time. Celebrate! You enjoy spending time with underprivileged children and giving them hope of a better future. Engage! You enjoy playing weekend basketball with friends - suit up and enjoy your friendships and the friendly competition. It’s perfectly okay to enjoy your commitments.

5) Remember to commit to the things that matter.

God, Marriage, Family, Church – these are things that have everlasting significance. These things matter. The birthday party for your cousin’s bratty children – not so much. If you are going to commit, make sure the things that you commit to are quality commitments.

'Your love of self will quickly harm anything of value in your life.' wise words. & really glad he mentioned psalm 145:13. such a great reminder to be faithful to God..

'..the Lord is trustworthy in all he promises and faithful in all he does.'

so what does faithfulness mean to you? feel free to chime in.

fruit of the spirit: goodness.

goodness [good-nis] noun:
     1. the state or quality of being good.
     2. moral excellence; virtue.
     3. kindly feeling; kindness; generosity.
     4. excellence of quality: goodness of workmanship.
     5. the best part of anything; essence; strength.

these last couple weeks have gone by way too fast. but it is good to be home with my husband.

the generosity of the people in my parents lives continues to blow me away. they were able to drive down here (with me tagging along-one way tickets are SO much cheaper, ha) and visit for a few days (which makes me think of how they were able to go to PARIS when we were STUCK there). both times the physical made it seem impossible, but the spiritual and the generosity of others made it just the opposite. those people, the wonderful friends my parents have, teach me about goodness.
they were able to experience a little bit of New Orleans and my dad finally got to see where his daughter was living. he said he's proud of us. so, distance aside, I think he approves.

speaking of my parents.. today is their anniversary! twenty seven years. happy day to the greatest of mom and dads. send love their way today.
isn't that the cutest? note that both of them have on tap shoes. can't even handle it.

fruit of the spirit: kindness..

..from the mouths of four year olds.

what does it mean to be kind?

s: not be mean. share. be nice. no hitting. no kicking... peanut butter's pretty nice!
>>disclaimer: she was licking peanut butter from her fingers as she was talking. though I would have to agree, peanut butter is pretty darn nice.

e: share your toys. be nice. no hitting. share your food.

show me how to be kind to each other..

ephesians 4:32 | be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as Christ God forgave you.

proverbs 12:25 | anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up.

colossians 3:12 | therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

choose kindness. and for goodness sake people, share your toys.

not leaving until wednesday and starting yesterday I already miss my husband.

can you have too much patience? ha. I would just like time to slow down a tad so I can have one more day here. but that probably wouldn't feel like enough. and at the same time I can't wait to get away.

yeah that's definitely not having to do with patience. probably just more of time needed to get out of town. and refreshed, I hope.

but I was thinking about peace and patience and how without one, the other is hard to attain. impatient moments are definitely not peaceful; when we don't have peace, we're impatient for it or something else.

be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. romans 12:12.

in our little community apartment, we're currently practicing patience while our strawberries grow. tiny little things in the beginning, aren't they?

that's all I really have on patience for now. I'll be in our home town wednesday afternoon for a bit and then my parents and I are diving back down here the next week so they can finally visit our new home. I'm sure I'll be roaming my internet space here before then, since this laptop here is completely portable. maybe my nieces will teach me something about patience. (:

what are your thoughts on patience?

peace continued.

I got an email the other day and in the subject line was, 'The newness of June' and it just sounded so peaceful and refreshing and I thought, 'GOOD THING. thank you, Jesus.' not that May was so terrible; there were many great moments. just looking forward to something new, you know? we'll see what God brings in June.

this just hasn't been my week, though. I am trying to stay at peace because naturally I'm being tested in that area, since the fruit this week is, none other than, peace.

but the reason I can have peace and be content during times that don't seem peaceful, when it doesn't even make sense how calm I remain, is hard to explain. this is the only way I can:

and the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7.

I can remember a time that I couldn't grasp having peace during trials and life is so much more enjoyable now. we are told not worry and to have peace. meaning, we're sinning if we worry. that's not very peaceful. so I encourage you to strive to find and receive the peace of God. He takes care of the things we think we need to worry about.

some other reminders of graciously given peace:

psalm 34:14 turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.

romans 8:6 the mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.

psalm 29:11 the Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses his people with peace.

john 14:27 peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you and the world gives. Do not let your hands be troubled and do not be afraid. [He has given His peace to us. already. we just have to receive and accept it and do what he says.]

And when it rains on your parade, look up rather than look down. Without the rain, there would be no rainbow. -G.K. Chesterton

the drive to and from the blueberry farm on Saturday. you're on a bridge crossing Lake Pontchartrain for about thirty minutes. it's not a very threatening bridge, but a long one nonetheless, so if you're not into bridges.. sorry 'bout it. a peaceful drive that day though.

lisamom on joy and why battles are FUN.

lisamom has some things to say about joy today and I believe you're really going to enjoy it. just in case you don't know who she is, lisamom is chad's mom. I feel like the term 'mother-in-law' is kind of icky for some reason. I think the world has tainted it for me in my head or something. so she's lisamom. because she is like another mom to me anyway. why not have another? she's known for being called momma t by many of the women at her church, so you can see that she is pretty incredible and loved. which makes me one blessed lady.

she is the queen of seeing fun in everything. I've watched her help many people, including myself, through struggles that make a person feel hopeless and she smiles through it all. she's known for asking, 'isn't this fun?!' right after she's seen someone cry their eyes out and tell her what they're going through (am I right , ladies??). I'm pretty sure they just look at her like she is a crazy person at first. but at this point it's almost a comfort to me. because I know she can see and truly believes that I will be victorious in the end. and if she can see it, you just take her word for it, trust me. so I just laugh a little and say 'I guess so..'

so now you can get a little, but great, glimpse of the fun that is happening in her heart and mind.

Consider it pure joy when you face trials of many kinds! James 1:2
For some reason that may or may not be your favorite scripture but when you consider how much God loves us, we can find a deeper joy when we are in the middle of all kinds of battles. Now that's fun!
It's not about being happy. I think people get the two mixed up. Happiness is fleeting but joy is deep in our beings. True joy comes from Love, knowing that no matter what, our Lord will never leave us which brings us strength! Holy spirit loves to help us through every circumstance and tapping into that Love brings an everlasting Joy! Now that is Fun!

I love the distinction she makes. joy and happiness are two different things! that was a good reminder. and sort of a relief, ha. thank you, lisamom. love you.
leave her some love down there in that comment box. (:

okay. don't judge me..

today I saw a preview for a show I've watched many times before and it led me to watching old videos and reminiscing my dancing days. maybe some of you have seen it; So You Think You Can Dance? don't judge me. once a dancer, always a dancer, alright?

[this doesn't really have much to do with the fruit of the spirit series. maybe it does, I don't know. dance did bring me many moments of joy. anyway.]

last year I was pretty busy with both jobs and getting ready to move across the country so I wasn't really planning on watching the show. that is until I saw the powerhouse that is melanie moore. and this dance you'll see in a second. it was obvious from her first performance that she would go pretty far on the show. the first time you saw her on stage was breathtaking. normally you see the talent improve, but it almost seemed like she didn't need to. for a minute I felt like it would be pointless to watch the entire show because there was no way someone could compete with her. but I decided to keep watching when I could because she was inspiring and so beautiful to watch. and then she won.

so I just thought I would share this video. and keep watching her other performances, it will prove to be a good day. (okay, if you're into watching dance. if not, well that's too bad.) seriously though, she's adorable. and just look at those massive leg muscles. yeesh.

have a good one. choose joy! and think about watching the show that starts tonight. I won't because we don't have cable. but maybe I'll think about catching up on hulu tomorrow. maybe. (:

okay and maybe, just make sure you watch this one too, because it was one of my favorites and super cute and all that girly stuff I don't like to admit. (;

fruit of the spirit: joy.

joy | joi | : noun. 1. the emotion of great delight or happiness caused by something exceptionally good or satisfying; keen pleasure; elation: She felt the joy of seeing her son's success.
                               2. a source or cause of keen pleasure or delight; something or someone greatly valued or appreciated: Her prose style is a pure joy.
                               3. the expression or display of glad feeling; festive gaiety.
                               4. a state of happiness or felicity.
                  -verb: 5. to gladden.

another one of those words that can't truly be understood by a literal definition.

I always understand joy and (choosing it) better when I remember that everything is grace. feelings, possessions, people.. each pain or time of sorrow. celebration and happiness. shame, and then forgiveness and restoration. rules and choosing to follow them. the sun, the night time break from the sun. a roof. stairs. trees.. everything is grace given.

because I remember what the alternative was, before Jesus so lovingly saved our souls.
instead of just suffering now, we would have been put to death. being alive and learning from Him and receiving His forgiveness is grace. so I choose to be content in all circumstances; to choose joy. because all of that grace I receive, in every moment of every day, gives me no right to be a grump.

+joy doesn't come from having your circumstances in order and under control; it comes from what's in your heart.
+there's nobody happier than a truly thankful person, a truly content person.
+we all want to see things get better. but where you are right this minute doesn't have to disturb you.
- Joyce Meyer

+to learn to be grateful and happy, whether hands full or empty. that is a secret worth spending a life on learning.
+joy doesn't negate all other emotions; joy transcends all other emotions.

love, continued.

I now know even better why I was uninspired before this series started. I was supposed to be reminded of something. of love, really.

it sort of bothers me when someone tells me how I should live my life. there is advice, and knowledge and wisdom, and I am always open to that. but that is different than someone telling me how they think things should go when they aren't even involved in the situation directly.

so I've been thinking lately.. that I really hope I don't do that, ha. I told Chad the other day that 'I don't want to want to be right all of the time'. <-- read it again slowly, it makes sense. I had to say it a couple times too. (:

but who am I to say how someone's life should go? unless God clearly speaks, shows me something, then I don't have a say. I am just supposed to love.

I recently read the book Blue Like Jazz by Donald Miller (really spoke to me, by the way. good read.), and there was a chapter on how to really love other people. he talks about someone he went to church with that he had a hard time being around because he just really didn't like him. everything this guy did and everything he talked about was annoying and rude. but then God spoke to him and he realized the issue wasn't the friend, it was himself. after he decided to let go of judging the friend, he realized he was really funny and smart and couldn't believe he hadn't noticed it before. once his view of his friend changed, they both started to change for the better.

I don't know if any of that made sense but this is the part that is sticking with me..

'I could feel God's love for him. I loved the fact that it wasn't my responsibility to change somebody, that it was God's, that my part was just to communicate love and approval.
When I am talking to somebody there are always two conversations going on. The first is on the surface; it is about politics or music or whatever it is our mouths are saying. The other is beneath the surface, on a level of the heart, and my heart is either communicating that I like the person I am talking to or I don't. God wants both conversations to be true. That is, we are supposed to speak truth in love. If both conversations are not true, God is not involved in the exchange, we are on our own, and on our own, we will lead people astray. The Bible says that if you talk to somebody with your mouth and your heart does not love them, that you are like a person standing there smashing two cymbals together. You are only annoying everybody around you. I think that is very beautiful and true.
..Now when I go to meet somebody, I pray that God will help me feel His love for them. I ask God to make it so both conversations, the one from the mouth and the one from the heart, are true.'

he also said, 'by being true I am allowing people to get to know the real me, and it feels better to have people love the real me than the me I invented.'

my job is to love.

like this..

dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. 1 john 3:18

fruit of the spirit: love.

my aunt asked if I was interested in starting a fruit of the spirit series with some other bloggers a couple weeks ago. (blog partyy!) each week we will be highlighting one fruit. I'm looking forward to all of the great things that are going to come from this. I know great things will be coming because I was really excited about the series and all of the sudden my aunt and I were uninspired in the few days leading to it. I figure God's got something big in store and a certain someone isn't too happy about it. (: so I just need to focus more and dig a little deeper.

love | lev | : noun. 1. an intense feeling of deep affection
                             2. a person or thing that one loves : she was the love of his life

the dictionary defines love, as all words, in a literal sense. but when I read all of the different descriptions, I didn't feel like they did the word justice, you know? it is such a big word in a little, four letter body.

I thought today though, since I posted recently on a real love revelation I had, I would link to that. it is still fresh in my life, as it was only some weeks ago that it happened, so I thought it would be appropriate for this first fruit of the spirit.

the dictionary doesn't talk about this kind of love. real love.

love is patient, love is kind. it does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. it does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth. it always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. love never fails.. 1 corinthians 13:1-8. the verses we hear so often, but are we always being all of those things?

I sometimes wish we could love the characters in real life as we love the characters in romances. there are a great many souls whom we should accept more kindly, and even appreciate more clearly, if we simply thought of them as people in a story. -g.k. chesterton

'Even if everything goes wrong, love is always right. There is ridiculous hope in this.' -ann voskamp.

stay tuned for more love this week. and keep up with the other wonderful people that are joining in the weeks to come.

also, I'd love if you would read this post. if you haven't already.
